CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department)

The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) at Vindhya Hospital plays a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of infection control and patient safety.
It is responsible for the sterilization, disinfection, and safe distribution of all surgical and medical instruments, linen, and supplies used throughout the hospital.

By following strict international sterilization standards, our CSSD ensures that every surgical and patient care procedure is supported with sterile, safe, and contamination-free equipment.

Objectives of CSSD

  • To provide sterile instruments, linen, and materials to all hospital departments.

  • To maintain aseptic conditions for all patient-care procedures.

  • To ensure infection prevention and control within the hospital environment.

  • To standardize sterilization processes and maintain detailed documentation for traceability.

Functions of CSSD

1. Collection & Decontamination

  • Collection of used surgical instruments, trays, and linen from Operation Theatres, ICUs, and Wards.

  • Initial cleaning and decontamination using enzymatic detergents or ultrasonic cleaners.

  • Visual inspection to ensure removal of all organic matter before sterilization.

Strict segregation is maintained between soiled and sterile areas to prevent cross-contamination.


2. Assembly & Packing

  • Assembling cleaned instruments into trays or sets according to the type of surgery or department requirement.

  • Wrapping and sealing items using sterilization-grade materials (autoclavable wraps, pouches, or containers).

  • Proper labeling with date, batch number, and sterilization indicator for traceability.

3. Sterilization

  • Fully Automatic Autoclave Machines with all indicators (Pressure, Temperature, and Time Control).

  • Use of Bowie-Dick, Chemical & Biological Indicators for each cycle to verify sterilization effectiveness.

  • Specialized sterilization methods include:

    • Steam Sterilization (Autoclaving) for general instruments and linen.

    • ETO (Ethylene Oxide) sterilization for heat-sensitive materials (if applicable).

    • Dry Heat Sterilization for glassware and metal instruments.


4. Storage & Distribution

  • Sterile items are stored in a clean, air-conditioned area with controlled temperature and humidity.

  • Distribution of sterile sets and materials is done according to departmental requests.

  • Expired or compromised sterile packs are removed immediately.
